Can Touch Hurt Migraine?

One troublesome symptom of migraine is skin hypersensitivity during an episode, a condition called allodynia. Anything touching the skin and even the hair—a hat, clothing, eyeglasses—can feel painful or overwhelming. 

A migraine sufferer might avoid touch therapy for fear it could cause more pain, which is possible with a massage that uses movement, too much pressure, or works too quickly, especially with a body holding chronic tightness, tension, and myofascial pain.

The Mundo Method approach is unique; this very gentle touch protocol modulates, quiets, stills, and releases a migraine’s sensations during an episode, along with accompanying symptoms. Interestingly, the protocol uses mind-body techniques to move toward instead of away from the pain to conquer it.

Early on in my experience, my hands would naturally find the heart of the pain on someone’s head (and my own) without thinking about it. When I transcribed into written instructions two decades of hands-on headache knowledge, my clients were able to relieve their own migraines. Around this I created my comprehensive relief and prevention Mundo Program because why suffer?

In 2006 I added phone and video sessions and found I could teach the protocol even without the benefit of in-person touch training, which later proved essential during pandemic times.

Hands-on Headache Healing

“Go ahead and close your eyes” I said in a calm, soft voice. “I’m just going to put my hands on your head.” I draped one hand delicately on the front of her head, the other on the back. My fingers listened for and were drawn to a pulsation. Stronger than a regular pulse, it had an electrical quality, almost like mini-explosions on her forehead. I held lightly, meeting the pulse at its own level of amplitude, and felt it fight back. I intensely focused my attention on the spot under my finger. “That’s where I feel it,” she affirmed as I did battle with the headache.

When the pulsations quieted in front, I felt the “emptying-out” at the back and knew it was over. She opened her eyes, blinking in the light, saying, “I felt it move from the left to the right, then gather up and evaporate—right here,” pointing to the back of her head.

Her report matched the real-time “bio-feedback” I’d felt in my hands, heard through her words, and seen in embodied signals during the process. The sensations I’d felt correlated with her various states of pain and relief.

We Get Busy

We get busy. We get busy and forget to breathe, to pay attention to life. That we’re right here, right now. We lose connection. Maybe we never had it. But we want it, yearn for it. You, me, we, people, life.

Transformative work can bring you back into your body, put you in touch with your cells, with yourself on the cellular level. You can breathe, relax, relieve pain, tension, and stuck places. Find the spaces you can’t feel into, that are numb, tight. You’re suddenly aware of qualities you’ve embodied—a wooden board, a bungee cord.

Bring your awareness into your body. Feel yourself breathe. In the moment. Settle into your Self and feel gravity hold you, right where you are. Feel. You’re alive. Breathe. Let it go.

Let go of the grip of now of then of centuries past. You were gripped by what you feared and tightened against, or learned to please, squeeze, or run away, or stay paralyzed, frozen, tucked in, tucked away. It was reaction, safety, protection, wanting affection.

Let those toxic layers get cried away, yelled out, coughed up, shaken out, drawn away, melted down. New skin, new shape, new ground, purpose, meaning. Ease in.

It can be refreshing, soothing, plumb the depths, release the pain. You’re the explorer. You and your body carve the path. Keep breathing. It all unfolds as you grow.
